Alexander Gustafsson Next in Line for the Title

UFC President, Dana White, announced yesterday that the UFC will be placing Alexander Gustafsson against the winner of the UFC 172 main event for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.  Gustafsson is coming off of an impressive TKO win at UFC Fight Night 37 in London this weekend.  At UFC 165, Gustafsson went five rounds with the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champ, Jon Jones.  It was a close fight that earned many MMA Fight of the Year awards and led many to think that Gustafsson had won the UFC championship.  With his victory this weekend he has earned an opportunity to face the winner of the title fight between Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira.  Jones believes that both men who are standing out as the two biggest threats to the title, Gustafsson and Daniel Cormier, should face each other to determine who would be the next challenger for the title.

I can agree with Jones to a certain extent about the emptiness of true title contention fights.  If you look at men that Glover Teixeira has faced in the UFC before earning a title shot you can understand Jones' frustration over Gustafsson getting a title shot this weekend.  Not to take anything away from Jimi Manuwa, who is a talented individual, but we were not even talking about Manuwa as being in line for the title.  We all expected to see Gustafsson defeat Manuwa this weekend and he did.  We all expected to see Cormier defeat Patrick Cummins and also no surprise, he did!  Though I can't wait to see Gustafsson trade leather with Jones again, I can't help thinking that I would much rather see the scenario in which Cormier and Gustafsson would have to face each other for a crack at Jones.  I am a big fan of Jones versus either of the two men, I just find the two versus each other more interesting than watch either fight for the title.  I think that the UFC want to have Cormier face the winner of Phil Davis vs. Anthony Johnson and then have him fight for the belt with a win.  Cormier is new to the division, but I respect what he accomplished in the heavyweight division and feel that his impressive wins should still hold weight when considering lining up challengers at 205 lbs.

Cormier Believes He's Ready for Jones; Jones Disagrees

UFC Light Heavyweight,  Daniel Cormier, is looking for a title fight with UFC Champion Jon Jones who he dropped to 205 lbs to face. He feels that he can take on Jones and beat him, but Jon Jones feels that Cormier hasn't earned that shot qith his defeat over Cummins. Jones feels that hia recent opponents are earning title shots qithout facing other top contenders. He feels that they are facing lower talent inatead of each other to earn a shot at the title.

Despite Daniel Cormier only having one fight 205 lbs, Daniel Cormier has already faced top-level competition in his few years in MMA. He has faced the likes of Antonio 'Big Foot' Silva, Josh Barnett, Frank Mir and Roy Nelson all in the heavyweight division. I think that Cormier still needs a top guy like Alexander Gustaffson or Phil Davis before he gets a shot, but outside of Davis and Alexander Gustaffson, there are no true contenders who have earned a shot. Anthony Johnson did huge things outside of the UFC and could potentially be thrown in the mix if he beats Davis. I really want to see Cormier face the winner of the Davis-Johnson fight or Alexander Gustaffson if he defeats Manuwa.

Jones and Weidman Both Interested in Super Fight

It seems that current UFC Champions Jon Jones and Chris Weidman both share an interest in competing with one another in a potential super fight.  Before you quote us in saying that this is going to happen soon, please realize that the two only share an interest and have not made steps towards trying to make this fight happen.

Both men share a sudden meteoric rise to stardom on their way to becoming champions.  Both men are strong offensive and defensive wrestlers who also have the ability to strike with guys who are considered to have better stand up skills.  This would be an interesting fight if it were to occur down the road after Weidman has at least 3 to 4 more title defense under his belt and both men are still champions a few years from now.  Now just wouldn't be the time for this fight to occur.  Had Silva not lost the UFC title at UFC 162 or possibly regained it at UFC 168, the Silva Jones fight would have been perfect.

GSP's Announcement and it's Effects

Today GSP held a press conference today to announce his future place in the UFC.  Georges "Rush" St-Pierre announced today that he will be stepping down as the UFC's Welterweight Champion and taking some much needed time off from the sport.  He is not retiring and does plan on coming back to the UFC.  With the title being vacated, the UFC has decided to let Johny Hendricks square off with Robbie Lawler to decide the next champion at UFC 171.  The UFC has moved the 205 lb title fight between Jones and Teixeira to UFC 172.  What are your thoughts on the announcements?

Jon Jones Wants Velasquez in 2014 and Retirement at 30

With Georges St-Pierre talking about possible retirement, fellow UFC Champion Jon Jones is speaking about his retirement as well, but he isn't finished yet.  Jon Jones, who is 26, is looking to retire by the time that he is 30.  Before doing that, he would like to put on a super fight against Cain Velasquez before the end of 2014.  With the Silva super fight pretty much diminished, Jones has admitted that he has really been considering a fight with Cain Velasquez, the current UFC Heavyweight Champion.

A fight with Anderson Silva was something that the UFC was seriously considering if both Silva and Jones had survived their recent title defenses, but Silva failed to defend his title against Weidman.  A fight with Cain Velasquez could be another great move for the UFC to make to get people to tune in. It will be a while before this fight could happen considering both men have contenders lined up in front of them already and both men having injuries.

Jones-Teixeira Fight Not Set for February

UFC 169 to Feature Jones & Teixeira for the Title

The UFC has announced that the UFC 169 will take place in February during Super Bowl weekend with Jon Jones' UFC Light Heavyweight belt being on the line. Glover Teixeira will be challenging the current champion Jon "Bones" Jones for the belt in New Jersey. Glover officially earned his title with a win over Ryan Bader in their bout at UFC Fight Night 28. Also added to the card was a match originally scheduled for UFC 167 in November: Mir-Overeem. This match was pushed back under the belief that the extra time would help the two men recover from their knockout losses and be better trained for their coming fight.
